The two cellar dwellers in the National League West, the San Francisco Giants and the Colorado Rockies, face each other on Saturday in the middle contest of a three-game series at Coors Field at 8:10 p.m. ET.
The Rockies drew first blood in a 15-3 beatdown to improve to 3-1 against San Francisco this season. Jake McCarthy had a big night, going 4-for-5 with two home runs and a career-high six RBIs.
Ezequiel Tovar had three hits, including a two-run homer, and drove in three runs for Colorado, which has won three straight at home.
Kyle Karros followed with three hits, including a triple, and Cole Carrigg tripled twice and added three RBIs. Mickey Moniak and Hunter Goodman each had two hits as Colorado totaled 18 on the night.
The offensive onslaught was more than enough for Ryan Feltner, who allowed three runs, two earned, on six hits in six innings while striking out a season-high nine and walking none to improve to 3-2.
Casey Schmitt broke out of an 0-for-14 rut with two hits and an RBI for the Giants, who have lost six of seven on the road, including three of their first four on this current six-game road trip.
Robbie Ray takes the mound for the Giants in this game and he is in fine form. He has won his last three starts and went 4-0 with a 1.36 ERA in five starts last month, allowing one earned run or less in four of those five outings.
His seven wins pace the Giants’ pitching staff, and he has a 3.31 ERA and 1.22 WHIP. He allowed three runs, but just one earned, on five hits while striking out six in four innings to earn a no-decision in a 19-6 Giants win over the Rockies on May 31st.
Ray’s last two outings have been masterful. He has gone eight innings and allowed one run in both starts, which were both wins.
The Rockies counter with Tomoyuki Suyomo, who is 8-4 with a 4.80 ERA, but he posted a 6.58 ERA in his five starts last month and lasted just five innings in four of those outings.
In Suyomo’s last start, he allowed seven earned runs on eight hits in five innings to earn a no-decision in a 9-8, 10-inning loss to the Minnesota Twins.
This is where San Francisco steals one in this three-game set. Ray is dealing right now, Suyomo is not, and the Rockies bats are due for a lighter performance after scoring a combined 29 runs the past two nights.
The lowest output these teams have had in four contests this season is 11 runs and they can combine to land the over in game two.
There have been 12 or more runs scored in five of the last six matches at Coors Field between the Rockies and their opponents, while this pair has played to the over in three of four games.
