The Chicago Cubs and Colorado Rockies will play the middle matchup of a three-game series on Wednesday night in Colorado.
Tuesday’s opener went the Rockies’ way via a 7-3 decision, ending a four-game losing streak for the home team.
The Cubs have dropped two straight and will plunge to .500 for the first time since April 15 if they lose again.
That Colorado (25-42) has a much worse record than Chicago (34-33) is of no concern. The Cubs are 7-21 in their last 28 games, so this is nothing close to the same club that was on display earlier this season.
Things may get even worse for the visitors, because Shota Imanaga is taking the mound tonight. In four starts dating back to May 18, Imanaga’s ERA has ballooned from 2.32 to 4.74.
The southpaw has given up eight, seven, five and six earned runs in those four appearances.
In this situation, you aren’t trying to find good things to say about either team – because there aren’t any. You are simply trying to find value on the betting market – and that is clearly with Colorado as a sizable underdog.
This should really be priced as an even matchup; even though the Cubs boast a much better record, the Rockies are at home and both starting pitchers – Imanaga and Michael Lorenzen – are in similarly disastrous form.
Although 12 may feel like a big number by normal MLB standards, there is obviously nothing normal about Coors Field.
Given the high altitude in Colorado, no team plays high-scoring games on a more consistent basis than the Rockies.
Nine of their last 10 contests have produced double-digit runs, including at least 15 in three of their last five.
In 10 consecutive games played by Colorado, the winning team has crossed the plate seven times or more.
The Rockies figure to light up Imanaga – and they need to, because Michael Lorenzen generally requires tons of run support.
Lorenzen has been horrendous in 2026, coming in with a 2-8 record, an 8.01 ERA and a 1.99 WHIP.
The righty was especially bad in his most recent outing last Wednesday against the Angels, who roughed him up for eight runs on 10 hits and two walks in only 3.1 innings during an 11-4 Los Angeles win.
Behind Lorenzen is a Colorado bullpen that ranks dead last league wide in ERA (5.24).
The Cubs may be in a bit of an offensive funk at the moment, but Michael Busch homered on Tuesday and Alex Bregman collected two hits.
Busch has hit safely in 13 of his last 15 games.
Happ went hitless on Tuesday, but he did walk twice – so he continues to see the ball well.
The Cubs’ left fielder has delivered multi-hit performances in six of the last 12 games and he tripled in this past Sunday’s series finale against San Francisco.
Happ is 3-for-10 lifetime against Lorenzen with two home runs, a double and five RBIs.
