Justin Gaethje Injury Update: Medical Suspension After Freedom 250

The newly crowned UFC Lightweight Champion Justin Gaethje has been dealt a six-month medical suspension following his grueling title-winning performance at UFC Freedom 250.

Gaethje captured the undisputed lightweight championship on June 14 after defeating previously unbeaten Ilia Topuria via TKO in the fourth round.

Both athletes Justin Gaethje and Ilia Topuria suffered severe injuries during the bout. Medical suspensions are common in mixed martial arts and are designed to protect athletes especially after demanding bouts.

Why was Justin Gaethje suspended?

Gaethje is on an up to 180-day medical suspension to heal from the injuries he suffered in his battle against Topuria. The suspension can be reduced if MRI examinations show no significant damage.

He is awaiting MRI results on his right wrist and left knee and must complete a mandatory 45-day rest period regardless of the outcome of the examinations.

The significance of the injuries he endured were enough for commission to keep him out of the Octagon for up to six months.

When can Gaethje fight again?

As early as January 2027, but it will depend on the outcome of his medical examinations.

There are already talks of a Topuria vs. Gaethje 2027 rematch when the two are both cleared from their medical suspensions.
