After sustaining an injury during his Freedom 250 fight, Ilia Topuria's injury status has been revealed.
Immediately after Ilia Topuria faced Justin Gaethje inside the Octagon at UFC Freedom 250, he was transported by ambulance to a local Washington D.C. hospital.
Topuria sustained severe damage and swelling to both of his eyes, and by the third round his left eye was almost completely shut.
The ringside doctor almost halted the bout in the third round but Ilia strongly urged the referee to let him continue.
Justin Gaethje took control of the fight with his heavy strikes and a brutal knee strike to Topuria's ribs at the end of Round 4.
In the fourth round, Ilia Topuria's corner officially stopped the fight awarding a TKO victory and undisputed Lightweight Championship title to Justin Gaethje.
Ilia Topuria suffered a small fracture to his orbital bone and severe damage to his eyes. It is reported that Topuria will not need any surgery and the fracture will heal naturally.
The former champion is expected to take an extended leave as he rehabilitates his eye before of any talk of returning to the Octagon.
UFC CEO Dana White said he hopes that Topuria takes the all the time he needs to recover and get healthy.
