The Portland Trail Blazers are off to an impressive 5-1 start this season, but will be without the newly acquired Ja Morant for multiple weeks.
Ja Morant joined the Trail Blazers in the offseason in a trade involving Jerami Grant and Kris Murray and looked like a smart acquisition during his first four games. Morant averaged 15.8 points and 5.5 assists in 25.8 minutes per game and formed an effective partnership with Damian Lillard and Deni Avdija in the Blazers offense.
Before he could really establish himself in Portland, Morant suffered an injury during a loss to the Memphis Grizzlies on October 29th.
In Morant’s absence, the Trail Blazers have promoted Scoot Henderson to the starting line-up. In the two games since Morant’s injury, Henderson has averaged 11 points in 28.5 minutes per game but has shot 7 of 21 from the field.
Morant was officially diagnosed with a Grade 2 left hamstring strain last week and is expected to miss several weeks. The 27-year-old is scheduled to be re-evaluated in four weeks and could miss the entire month of November.
Morant has dealt with multiple injuries throughout his career, but his hamstring strain is not considered a recurring issue.
Depending on how quickly Morant recovers, he will either return to action in late November or early December.
Given the nature of the injury, I expect Morant to remain sidelined until December. Portland have a break from December 3-12 for the NBA Cup, and their guard could return during that period or in their first regular season game afterwards, at home against the Atlanta Hawks on Saturday, December 12.
