Carolina Hurricanes and Philadelphia Flyers are set for Game 3 of their Eastern Conference semifinals playoff series Thursday night at Xfinity Mobile Arena in Philadelphia.
The Hurricanes own a 2-0 series lead after winning Game 1 by a score of 3-0 and Game 2 by a score of 3-2 in overtime. Thus, Carolina is looking to take firm control of the series with a 3-0 lead, while Philadelphia is looking to turn things around on home ice.
Furthermore, the Flyers are looking to end the Hurricanes’ undefeated postseason, as Rod Brind’Amour’s squad is a perfect 6-0 so far in the NHL Playoffs.
The Hurricanes appear to be on a mission to make a statement in this postseason. Carolina has made the playoffs in eight consecutive seasons, but has yet to make the Stanley Cup Final in that span. Looking to change that, the Hurricanes are putting forth a dominating postseason effort thus far.
Carolina has won all six of its postseason games up to this point, and four of those wins have come in regulation. Known for their strong and physical defensive-minded style of play, the Hurricanes have done a fantastic job of limiting scoring chances from their opponents. They allowed just five total goals in their four-game sweep over the Senators, and have allowed just two total goals through two games against the Flyers.
Philadelphia is in a major offensive rut right now, having been held to two goals or fewer in five straight games. The Hurricanes have heavily tilted the ice in their favor in this series, as they’ve out-shot the Flyers 65-55 through two games. There isn’t much evidence to suggest that things are going to change in Game 3.
Look for the Hurricanes to roll once again and win this one in regulation time.
The Flyers have scored just seven total goals over their last five games. But as they enter Game 3 on home ice down 2-0, look for Philadelphia to really put an emphasis on generating scoring chances as opposed to staying buttoned up defensively.
The first two games of this series have shown us that the Flyers aren’t able to hang with the Hurricanes in low-scoring, grind-it-out contests, which should prompt a shift in their overall game plan. It’s easier said than done to get things rolling offensively against Carolina, but Philadelphia’s sense of urgency and aggressiveness should be high enough to prompt a better offensive performance.
Carolina’s power play is operating at a lowly 12.0% clip so far in the playoffs, but it would be a bit surprising to see those woes continue. During the regular season, the Hurricanes ranked 4th in the NHL with a 24.9% conversion rate on the man advantage.
Rod Brind'Amour's men possess elite scoring depth, and all four lines are capable of doing damage. Plus, if Philadelphia does choose to emphasize being aggressive offensively, that could open up more avenues for Carolina going the other way. With a total of 5.5, look to the over.
