Ecuador will complete their World Cup preparations with a friendly against Guatemala in Ohio on Sunday as one of South America's meanest defences looks for a pre-tournament boost.
Ecuador are set to open their World Cup journey in Group E against Ivory Coast on 15 June and are fresh off a friendly win over Saudi Arabia last time out.
Guatemala must attempt to arrest a run of three straight defeats having failed in their attempt to qualify for a first World Cup.
Ecuador were hugely impressive in qualifying through the CONMEBOL group, finishing second only to world champions Argentina and ahead of the likes of Colombia, Uruguay and Brazil.
They did so with incredible economy, scoring 14 goals in their 18 games and conceding just five times.
They have been breached in each of their last three friendlies against Morocco, Netherlands and Saudi Arabia but face much lower-ranked opposition now in Guatemala – currently 96th in the FIFA rankings.
Veteran forward Enner Valencia remains the go-to man for Ecuador up front, though the likes of Alan Minda, Nilson Angulo and Jeremy Arevalo could all step up this summer.
The Guatemalans have lost their last three games 11-1 on aggregate but with Ecuador unlikely to prove free-scoring, the best play in this game is a low-scoring win for La Tricolor in Ohio.
Staying on that theme, a 2-0 correct scoreline for the Ecuador win appeals. Sebastian Beccacece's side have not scored more than two goals in any of their last 14 games.
At one stage in qualifying they played out four successive nil-nil draws against Chile, Brazil, Peru and Paraguay.
Guatemala are without a clean sheet in seven of their last eight games, conceding an average of 2.25 goals per game.
This will be the fourth meeting of these nations, the third since 2018, and each of the previous three games has finished in a 2-0 Ecuadorian success.
A high corner count seems unlikely at the ScottsMiracle-Gro Field in Columbus. Ecuador's recent 2-1 win over Saudi Arabia featured just four corners, while their March draw with Morocco returned one fewer.
The outlier for them in 2026 was a 1-1 draw with Netherlands in Eindhoven in March when they won the corner count 10-2, though the hosts had Denzel Dumfries sent off after just 12 minutes, allowing Ecuador to dominate proceedings.
Guatemala were beaten 2-0 by the Czech Republic in New Jersey earlier this week, a contest that produced just two corners across the 90 minutes. Taking these sides to fall short of nine corners combined looks to be an astute play.
