The Chicago Bears and their fans had an old fashioned Halloween scare a little early this year after quarterback Caleb Williams went down with an injury against the Vikings.
Caleb Williams exited the the Chicago Bears' 9-3 loss to the Minnesota Vikings midway through the fourth quarter after going down awkwardly with a leg injury after he was appeared to be tripped up by linebacker Andrew Van Ginkel. After the game, Van Ginkel confirmed that he did not make contact with Williams
Williams went down in a heap nonetheless, grabbing his hamstring and screaming in pain. The quarterback received on-field treatment from the training staff and tried to stand on his own twice before being carried to the Bears' sideline. Williams spent several minutes in the blue injury tent before being carted back to the locker room.
Visibly emotional on the cart, Williams placed a towel over his head while raising his arm to give fans at Soldier Field a thumbs-up.
After the final whistle, it was confirmed that Williams only has a hamstring injury and nothing worse. Many fans had speculated that the former first overall pick had torn his Achilles, but that ended up not being the case.
In the locker room after the game, journalists reported that Williams looked fine, walking around without even a wrap on his injured leg. Williams is set to undergo imaging on his right hamstring on Monday according to Adam Schefter, but early indications suggest the injury is not nearly as bad as initially feared.
Prior to his exit, Williams had struggled to find a rhythm. He completed 15 of 26 pass attempts with zero touchdowns and one interception, just one week after leading the Bears to 59 points in Week 1 against the Carolina Panthers.
The extent of Williams' injury is not yet known, making it difficult to say when he might return to action. However, it was confirmed that Williams avoided a major injury and the team are not even ruling him out for Monday Night Football against the Eagles this week. Ben Johnson did say he expects his quarterback to miss 'some time' but has not provided a specific timeline.
If Williams has a Grade 1 hamstring strain, he will likely miss only one to three weeks. In this scenario, he could return as early as Week 3 against the Eagles, but it's more likely he plays Week 4 against the Jets. A Grade 1 strain is a mild tear involving some tightness, though the player is still able to bear weight on the leg.
Should he suffered a Grade 2 hamstring strain, he would face roughly three to six weeks on the sidelines, potentially missing up to six games. With a Grade 2 strain, he would likely return against the Patriots, Seahawks, or Buccaneers.
