A'ja Wilson: Height, Weight, Playing Style, Strengths, Achievements

A'ja Wilson has dominated the WNBA ever since she entered the league in 2018.

A standout under head coach Dawn Staley at South Carolina, Wilson was a coveted prospect after winning a National Championship, being named an All-American three times, and winning all the major Player of the Year awards in her senior season. She was drafted first overall by the Las Vegas Aces in 2018.

Thanks to her impressive performances in the WNBA with the Aces and on the international stage for Team USA, Wilson is now one of the most famous women's basketball players in the world.

A'ja Wilson is about average size for her position in the WNBA. While her basketball IQ and skill with the ball are the keys to her success, her long arms help her block shots and steal the ball, and she's fast enough to lead a fast break or keep up with smaller guards when running in transition.

A'ja Wilson won the WNBA MVP Award in 2024, and she posted career-high averages in points, rebounds, and blocks while averaging a career-low in turnovers.

In addition to being named MVP, Wilson earned All-WNBA and All-Defensive honors and led the league in points per game, blocks per game, player efficiency rating, win shares, and usage rating.

Wilson had 11 games with 30+ points, and she reached the 40-point mark twice in 2024. Her season-high was 42 points — without a single made three-pointer — against the Dallas Wings in late August, and she dropped 41 on the Phoenix Mercury two games later.

Her numbers dipped a bit in the playoffs — Wilson posted averages of 21.3 points, 9.7 rebounds, 2.8 assists, 0.3 steals and 2.5 blocks — as the Aces were eliminated by the New York Liberty in the semifinals after winning back-to-back titles in 2022 and 2023.

After a slightly longer offseason than she had the previous two years, Wilson will likely hit the ground running in 2025.

A'ja Wilson Playing Style and Strengths

A'ja Wilson is arguably the most skilled player in the WNBA.

She can do it all inside the arc, from posting up defenders to popping out from a screen to hit a mid-range jumper. She doesn't take many threes, but she makes them at a respectable rate of 34.5 percent for her career.

Wilson excels at creating separation off the dribble to get to her spot and hit a jumper, but she's also fully comfortable when attacking the basket and finishing through contact. Her ability when driving to the hoop is shown by the fact that she's ranked in the top two in free-throw attempts in each of the last five seasons.

Defensively, Wilson has elite anticipation, which helps her make the most of her wingspan and height. She has led the league in blocks in three consecutive seasons, and she ranked 10th in steals in 2023 and fifth in that stat in '24.

A'ja Wilson in the WNBA Landscape

A'ja Wilson is the consensus best player in the WNBA. With the league set for a new collective bargaining agreement after the 2025 season, she is one of the names that pop up in conversations about who could sign a record-setting contract after the CBA is ratified.

Wilson is endorsed by Nike, and the company made her the 13th WNBA player in league history to have her own signature shoe. Wilson's shoe is called the A'One. She also has endorsement deals with Gatorade, Ruffles, and Mountain Dew.

She was included on the cover of the All-Star edition of the video game NBA 2K25 along with Jayson Tatum of the NBA's Boston Celtics, making Wilson the first WNBA player to be featured on the game's global cover. Time Magazine named Wilson one of the 100 most influential people in the world in 2024, and it named her one of 13 Women of the Year for 2025.
