Entering the 2025 WNBA regular season, Las Vegas Aces superstar center A'ja Wilson (+145) is the favorite to win the Defensive Player of the Year Award.
Wilson is the last player to win the award in back-to-back years, doing so in 2022 and 2023. She has averaged 1.2 steals and 1.9 blocks for her career, and she posted career-highs in both stats in '24 with 1.8 steals and 2.6 blocks per game.
Last year's winner, Minnesota Lynx forward Napheesa Collier (+350), is second in the betting entering the 2025 campaign.
Collier averaged 1.9 steals and 1.4 blocks in 2024, and she proved her ability to defend effectively in all areas of the floor. With Collier as the closest defender, players shot 59.1 percent in the restricted area and around 32.0 percent from three, per WNBA tracking stats, both of which ranked her among the top 25 percent of players.
Seattle Storm center Ezi Magbegor (+850) is third in the odds and the last player shorter than 10/1 entering the season. Standing at 6-foot-4, the Australian-born center averaged 2.2 blocks and 1.1 steals in 2024, made First-Team All-Defensive, and finished third in DPOY voting. She held opponents to 60.0 percent shooting in the restricted area while facing 14.5 shot attempts per game right under the basket.
Fourth in the market is newly-signed Phoenix Mercury forward Alyssa Thomas (+1200). The veteran triple-double machine is a six-time All-Defensive team honoree and won the steals title in 2020. She averaged 1.6 steals for the Connecticut Sun last season, and time will tell how quickly she adjusts in her 12th professional season after playing the previous 11 for the Sun.
New York Liberty superstar forward Breanna Stewart (+1600) is fifth in the odds after averaging 1.7 steals and 1.3 blocks last season. Stewie is a six-time All-Defensive honoree, and she was one of the best interior defenders in 2024 as opponents shot 58.4 percent against her in the restricted area.
The next tier of Defensive Player of the Year contenders are Chicago Sky forward Angel Reese (+2000), Liberty forward Jonquel Jones (+2200), Indiana Fever forward Aliyah Boston (+2500), and Los Angeles Sparks center Cameron Brink (+3000).
