York Dante Festival: Day two runners, riders & odds
William Dobbie
A stacked field of eight will put their Derby credentials to the test in the Dante Stakes on Wednesday.
The Group 2 event - from which the three-day meeting gets its name - is a key stop along the Epsom Derby trail and has produced no less than five Derby winners since the turn of the century.
Most recently, it was Desert Crown who stormed up the Knavesmire prior to plundering Classic honours less than a month later.
This year's renewal looks wide open, with Christmas Day (5/2), Item (11/2) and Morshdi (3/1) locked in a three-way battle for favouritism.
An interesting side plot is that Godolphin's King's Trail (13/2) will be the first to test the 2000 Guineas form after Charlie Appleby earmarked him for a step up in trip following his disappointing ninth in the opening Classic of the season.
Prior to the running of the Dante, there is the not-so-small event of the Group 2 Middleton Fillies' Stakes.
See The Fire (5/4) produced arguably the performance of her career to land this race in scintillating fashion 12 months ago and bids for a repeat success after a nice prep in the Nottinghamshire Oaks last month.
Five-time Group 1 winner Fallen Angel (10/3) steps back up to 10 furlongs for the first time she was defeated in the Prix de l'Opera and faces opposition from Diamond Rain (3/1), who has had a considerably lighter career despite matching her for age.
