Wrexham have been linked with a shock move for former Manchester United defender Axel Tuanzebe as the Welsh club look to add to boss Phil Parkinson's squad ahead of the closure of the transfer window.
The powerful 28-year-old centre-back is on the lookout for a new club after departing Burnley at the end of last season.
Tuanzebe made 14 appearances for the Clarets during an injury-hit campaign at Turf Moor but managed to prove his fitness during the latter stages of the campaign before impressing for DR Congo at the World Cup.
He has been linked with a move to newly-promoted Hull City this summer although a move hasn't yet come to fruition, with a handful of Championship clubs now understood to be readying moves for the former United man.
Wrexham are the latest to be credited with serious interest with the Daily Mail reporting that Dragons boss Parkinson is ready to put an offer on the table.
The Welsh club have been patient in their hunt for new signings this summer, capturing the signatures of just three players as the window heads into its final week.
Ben Whiteman and Danny Imray arrived from Preston North End and Crystal Palace last month for a combined outlay of £9 million whilst goalkeeper Anthony Patterson has since checked-in at the Racecourse Ground in an £8 million deal from Sunderland.
Wrexham are expected to be active between now and the end of the month with a central defender, winger and striker all understood to be on their wish-list.
They have reportedly shown interest in Leicester City skipper Harry Souttar, who looks set to leave the League One side this month, and Leeds United's Lukas Nmecha, whilst more far-fetched rumours of a potential move for Jack Grealish have come to light in the past couple of days after he was spotted taking in their showdown with Cardiff City last week.
However, any supporters' hopes of shock deal were quickly dashed by Sky Sports commentator Gary Weaver.
"Well, I know that Wrexham have got money," Weaver said whilst reporting on last Friday's Welsh derby.
"Jack Grealish, in attendance here this evening, was playing in the Community Shield yesterday. And his big pal, and very close friend, is Callum Robinson from their days together at Aston Villa.
"So, maybe he's given him a ticket to stay on for an extra night in Cardiff - which is a cracking city - to watch Cardiff City against Wrexham, this huge occasion tonight."
