The 2006 final between Italy and France ended all square after Marco Materazzi cancelled out Zinedine Zidane's opener.
It was Italy who were victorious with left-back Fabio Grosso slotting home the winning penalty.
The other final to go to penalties was at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
After a thrilling 3-3 draw between Argentina and France, Argentina prevailed on penalties to win the World Cup for a third time.
