Wolves set to land Kieran Trippier transfer coup

Wolves are reportedly set to make a major statement signing with the capture of free agent Kieran Trippier following his exit from Newcastle United.

Relegated to the Championship after finishing bottom of the Premier League last season, Wolves are aiming to conduct their transfer business swiftly as they look to orchestrate an immediate return to the top-flight.

The club initiated talks with Trippier last week and despite interest from elsewhere, the 35-year-old has decided to join Rob Edwards' side in their quest to win promotion from the Championship.

Sky Sports journalist Keith Downie posted on X that Trippier "has said yes to a two-year deal plus the option of a third" and the former England international will undergo a medical once he returns from a family holiday next week.

Trippier bid farewell to Newcastle after a successful four-year spell at St James' Park where he captained the club and helped them secure their first piece of silverware in 70 years in the 2025 EFL Cup final.

Arriving on Tyneside with the Magpies battling relegation, Trippier played a pivotal role in spearing Eddie Howe's revolution which saw the club return to the UEFA Champions League for the first time in two decades.

Trippier made 160 appearances for Newcastle, scoring four goals and registering 29 assists - 10 of which he produced during an extremely productive 2023/24 Premier League season.

The former Burnley and Tottenham Hotspur right-back previously spent three years at Atletico Madrid, where he won the La Liga title in 2021.

Trippier also amassed 54 appearances for England, featuring in the Three Lions side that reached the finals of Euro 2020 and Euro 2024, along with the semi-finals of the 2018 World Cup.

A player of his experience and evident quality will be a major asset for Wolves as they look to right the wrongs of an extremely difficult campaign.

The Molineux outfit threatened to break Derby County's total for the lowest points total in top-flight history until back-to-back wins over Aston Villa and Liverpool in early March saw them avoid the ignominy of becoming the Premier League's worst-ever team.

Wolves announced last week confirmation of Andre's contract extension, with the highly sought Brazilian midfielder committing to a new four-year deal, which head coach Edwards hopes will be the centrepiece of a successful rebuild this summer.

Edwards told the official club website: “I hope we’ll be getting a winning team, a team that the fans can get behind, because, ultimately, everyone wants a winning team.

"We’re six months in now and it was always going to take a bit of time to get there, but we knew that when we came in, so if we can start well next season, I think there’ll be a great feeling around the club once again."
