Oxford United have officially announced Aaron Ramsey as their new head coach just days after parting company with Matt Bloomfield.
The former Wycombe Wanderers boss paid the price for the U's relegation back down to the third-tier with the club opting to wield the axe on the 42-year-old just five months after replacing Gary Rowett.
It was widely expected that Bloomfield would lead Oxford's League One promotion charge this season, but that task will now fall upon former Arsenal star Ramsey, who will be undertaking his first full-time managerial role.
The 86-time Wales international's only previous experience came in an interim capacity at former side Cardiff City, for whom he oversaw two draws and a defeat when they slipped out of the Championship at the end of the 2024/25 campaign.
He subsequently opted to make a move to UNAM Mexico last summer in a bid to extend his playing career, only for injuries and off the field issues to cut short his spell in Latin America.
Despite vowing to explore further opportunities in the EFL, the 35-year-old called time on his distinguished football career in April after clocking up 548 appearances for the likes of Arsenal, Juventus and Rangers, with the Caerphilly man now turning his hand back to management.
He will join an Oxford side eager to rebuild and challenge for promotion back to the Championship after ending last term in 22nd place, four points adrift of safety.
The U's enjoyed a hugely successful campaign the last time at this level, culminating in a 2-0 victory over Bolton Wanderers in the 2023/24 League One play-off final.
Josh Murphy's first-half brace helped end the club's eight-year stay in the third-tier and now Ramsey will be desperately hoping he can revitalise the squad over the coming months in an attempt to emulate the class of 24'.
The Welshman will be expecting to be busy during the summer transfer window with the club having released a number of players following the conclusion of last term including Przemysław Płacheta, Myles Peart-Harris, Hidde ter Avest, Owen Dale and Tom Bradshaw.
