The oldest and most prestigious tennis tournament worldwide, Wimbledon is also renowned for its authentic grass courts.
Learn more about the famed Wimbledon courts, the layout and how a court is chosen for a match.
There are 18 Championships grass courts at Wimbledon used throughout the competition.
In addition to this, there are 20 grass practice courts and eight American Clay courts. Apart from the grass courts, the other courts are in use all year round by the Club members and LTA-sponsored players.
The main factors that go into selecting the court for a match at Wimbledon are the tournament's schedule, the players' rankings and popularity, as well as the desire to prioritise on-site and global viewership.
The All England Lawn Tennis & Croquet Club (AELTC) creates an order of play each day, deciding which matches will be played on which courts after reviewing the above factors.
The grass courts are in play from May to September, barring the Centre Court and other Show Courts which are used solely for The Championships.
The courts are lent to a number of organisations and clubs in order to stage a variety of events.
