After a loan move at Millwall last season, Southampton have confirmed that midfielder Will Smallbone will leave the club at the expiry of his current contract.
The 26 year-old, who was a product of the Southampton academy, has made 90 appearances in total for his boyhood club, including 34 in the Premier League.
Smallbone spent the entirety of the 2025/26 season out on loan at Millwall, impressing in 10 Championship appearances for the club, before suffering a season-ending injury in October.
With the Ireland international set to depart St Mary's this summer, let's take a look at which clubs could sign him.
Despite only making 10 appearances for the club, Will Smallbone made a strong impression at Millwall and could be in line for a permanent move to the club.
At 26, Smallbone offers good experience in the first and second tiers of English football and could be a good replacement for January singing Barry Bannan, who already looks set to exit the club.
Famously spending shrewdly in the transfer market, a move for the former Stoke loanee would fit Millwall's strategy, whilst also bringing a top level Championship footballer to the Den.
The club most heavily linked with a move at present, Chris Wilder's Sheffield United are looking to add quality to their squad to push for promotion back to the top flight.
It was reported back in January that the Blades were interested in a move for the 15-cap Ireland International, with Smallbone's availability sure to attract Wilder's attention once more.
Sheffield United have added some big-name free transfers in recent seasons, picking up Danny Ings, Ben Mee, Jairo Reidewald and Patrick Bamford last summer.
After an extremely impressive first season back in the second division of English football, Hollywood-owned Wrexham could make a move to secure Smallbone's signature.
With a business model that has seen them consistently hoover up proven players in each division they have competed in, Wrexham have consistently picked up the right calibre of player in each season so far.
Currently a promotion chasing Championship side, Will Smallbone fits the current level of the Wrexham squad and would offer good depth to cover their already top quality midfield.
