Newcastle have signed Bosnia & Herzegovina international Amar Dedic for £30m.
The Magpies announced the capture of the Benfica defender in time for him to be available for their Premier League opener against Liverpool on Sunday.
We take a look at what he will bring to Matthias Jaissle's squad...
Born on 18th August 2002 in Zell am See, Salzburg, Austria; Dedic is 24 years old.
Despite being born in Austria, Dedic has full Bosnian citizenship and represented them internationally at youth level.
Newcastle paid £30m to bring Dedic to the North East of England, where he has put pen to paper on a five-year deal.
Dedic is able to operate at wing-back and as more of a traditional right-sided full-back.
Of a lean build and standing at 5ft11in, Dedic is right-footed.
The 24-year-old very much fits into the modern mould of a full-back, prioritising progression up the pitch over all-action defending.
He progresses the ball through two ways: passing and dribbling.
Dedic is an extremely adept passer of the ball, standing out when compared to positional peers in metrics such as key passes and Assists/90.
His dribbling is also a valuable asset. Dedic was an elite ball carrier during his time at Benfica, using his pace to drive at the opposition defence, getting his team up the pitch in the blink of an eye.
One benefit for Newcastle will be that he has already worked under new coach Jaissle.
During their time together at RB Salzburg, Jaissle used Dedic as both a wing-back and traditional full-back, so he should be familiar with what is required of him in the system.
Dedic joined the Sturm Graz youth setup as a youngster before being picked up by the RB Salzburg academy. He made his professional debut at 16 and scored his first goal in 2020.
In July of that same year, Dedic signed a brand new four-year-deal with the Austrian side and, after making a few appearances, was sent out on loan to Wolfsberger.
After a season on loan, he returned to RB Salzburg where he made his UEFA Champions League debut in August 2022, establishing himself as a key player as his side lifted the Austrian Bundesliga title.
In February 2025, Dedic was loaned to Marseille, playing just 10 matches before sealing a permanent move to Portuguese giants Benfica.
Dedic has really taken his game to the next level in Lisbon, playing 38 matches in his sole season at the club -- including 10 in the Champions League -- scoring once and providing four assists under Jose Mourinho.
Dedic received caps for Bosnia & Herzegovina at U17, U19 & U21 level, eventually making his senior bow in a friendly against Luxembourg in 2022.
He has gone onto to play 31 times for his county -- scoring once -- and played three matches at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
