Where are Tottenham Hotspur's UEFA Champions League runners-up?

The 2019 UEFA Champions League final saw Tottenham Hotspur play in a European final for the first time since their 1984 UEFA Cup win.

It came on the back of one of the greatest comebacks in the competition's history, with Lucas Moura scoring with the last kick of the game to send Spurs to Madrid.

Although Mauricio Pochettino’s side came up short in the final, it was one of the best Tottenham sides for a generation, coming into the final on the back of third, second, third and fourth placed finishes in the Premier League.

Below, we look at Tottenham's starters from that night and where they ended up.

GK – Hugo Lloris

Tottenham’s captain on the night, Hugo Lloris spent 11 years as Spurs’s number one, before moving to Los Angeles FC in 2024 where he still plays now.

RB – Kieran Trippier

Signed as the understudy to Kyle Walker, Kieran Trippier was promoted to starting right-back in his third season and started the UEFA Champions League final. After four years in North London, Trippier moved to Atletico Madrid where he spent two and a half years.

Trippier returned to England in January 2022 to join Newcastle where he still features today.

CB – Toby Alderweireld

After an impressive campaign with Southampton on loan, Toby Alderweireld was snapped up by Tottenham, immediately becoming a part of the furniture at White Hart Lane. After 236 appearances in six seasons, Alderweireld moved to Qatar for a year before returning to Belgium with Royal Antwerp.

Alderweireld scored a dramatic late equaliser to secure a first league title in 66 years for his new club at the end of the 2022/23 season and remains a part of the side.

CB – Jan Vertonghen

Making up the other half of the Belgian defensive duo was Jan Vertonghen. Playing alongside Alderweireld for five years, Vertonghen left in 2020 to join Benfica.

After two years in Portugal, Vertonghen returned to Belgium, joining Anderlecht, where he’s been ever since.

LB – Danny Rose

A promising left-back, Danny Rose’s potential went somewhat unfulfilled with injuries hampering his development.

Ending his 13-year association with the club in 2021, Rose spent the year with Watford, retiring the following year.

CM – Moussa Sissoko

It took Moussa Sissoko a couple of years to break into the Tottenham first team, at which point injuries stopped him featuring more regularly than he did.

Leaving for Watford in 2021, Sissoko spent a couple of years in France with Nantes before returning to Vicarage Road at the start of the season, where he’s featured regularly for the Hornets.

CM – Harry Winks

Enjoying something of a breakthrough year in 2019, Harry Winks was given the nod to start the final against Liverpool. The Spurs academy graduate struggled to kick on, however, and was loaned to Sampdoria in 2022 before being sold to Leicester the following year.

Despite being a regular in their promotion-winning 2023/24 campaign, Winks hasn’t featured as regularly this season, with a fall-out with boss Ruud van Nistelrooy seeing the midfielder axed from the squad.

RW – Dele Alli

One of England’s finest attacking midfielders, the departure of Pochettino signalled the beginning of the end for Dele Alli at Tottenham. Leaving in 2022 to join Everton, Alli moved to Besiktas on loan the following season.

After being released by Everton, Alli was picked up by Como, currently led by Cesc Fabregas, where he looks to rebuild his career.

AM – Christian Eriksen

One of the Premier League’s finest playmakers, Christian Eriksen left Spurs in 2020 on a free transfer to join Inter.

After suffering a life-threatening cardiac arrest at Euro 2020, Eriksen recovered to play professional football again with Brentford.

After an impressive spell in West London, Eriksen moved to Manchester United, where he’s spent the last three years.

LW – Son Heung-min

After asking to leave Tottenham for more playing time, Son Heung-min would go on to become one of the best forwards in the club’s history.

Racking up more than 450 appearances for the club, Son now captains Spurs.

CF – Harry Kane

Harry Kane was rushed back to fitness for the 2019 final and looked short of total match sharpness in Madrid, in what was one of the England captain’s rare glimpses of silverware.

After more than a decade at Tottenham, Kane left to join Bayern Munich, where he finally won his first major trophy as a player, capturing the 2024/25 Bundesliga title.
