On Thursday Cristiano Ronaldo announced that he would retire from international effective immediately.
The shock news saw Ronaldo bring the curtain down on a 23-year stint representing Portugal on the international stage.
In all, Ronaldo bows out having made 234 senior appearances for his country since first stepping out as a second-half substitute against Kazakhstan as a substitute in the summer of 2003.
Ronaldo bows out as the player with the most caps in history, with his tally 26 more than his nearest challenger Lionel Messi and 28 more than the current leader among active internationals Luka Modric.
It wasn't until his eighth appearance for Portugal that Ronaldo opened his account in international football, netting a late consolation as the Seleção das Quinas were beaten by eventual winners Greece at Euro 2004.
From there however the 41-year-old was prolific, netting 146 times to become the highest overall men's international goalscorer in history.
As he steps away following a highly-publicised spat with the national set-up, we've taken a look at the last time Ronaldo played for his country.
While many expected Ronaldo to call time on his international career following Portugal's exit from the 2026 World Cup in North America, the legendary striker insisted he wouldn't make any rash decisions.
The appointment of Jorge Jesus as Portugal's new head coach following the tournament appeared to point towards a new era for the national team but Ronaldo retained his place when Jesus named his squad for Nations League fixtures in September.
"His performance, his past, doesn't matter; what matters is his entire history, and therefore his performance, like everyone else's, will tell me what decisions I have to make in games and in training." Jesus said of Ronaldo's inclusion.
"Cris is a player like everyone else; if he performs well, he plays; if he doesn't perform well, he doesn't play. That's how I do it with everyone, and it's not because he is Cris."
Jesus' first fixture in charge saw Portugal play host to Wales in the UEFA Nations League on 24 September, 2026, a game that would ultimately prove to Ronaldo's final appearance for his country.
Captaining his country for the 172nd time, Ronaldo had ample opportunities in front of goal but failed to make good on his chances and was substituted in the second half as Portugal claimed a 1-0 win courtesy of a goal from his Al Nassr team-mate Joao Felix.
Ronaldo was left on the bench as Portugal faced Norway in Oslo three days later, and he could be seen walking down the the tunnel alone at full-time as his team-mates thanked the travelling support.
Ronaldo later left the squad after being told he would again not start when they faced Denmark and was suspended by the Portuguese FA.
He was later handed a 30-day suspension and a fine of £215, but despite Jesus keeping the door for a potential return open, subsequently opted to retire.
The last of Cristiano Ronaldo's 146 senior international goals came during the World Cup in North America this summer.
Ronaldo had come under criticism after struggling to make in impact as Portugal were held to a draw by DR Congo in their opener, but had responded emphatically with a brace in their following game against Uzbekistan.
He again drew a blank in their final group game against Colombia as Portugal progressed to the expanded knockout stage as runners-up in Group K.
Ronaldo would net his final Portugal goal in their World Cup Round of 32 clash against Croatia on 3 July, 2026.
After Ivan Perisic opened the scoring early in the second half, Ronaldo put his side back on level terms from the penalty spot after the referee pointed to the spot when Renato Veiga was brought down in the box.
Delaying his run-up slightly, Ronaldo fired his spot-kick down the middle of the goal leaving Dominik Livakovic helpless.
Then-Portugal boss Roberto Martinez substituted Ronaldo in the closing stages, and Goncalo Ramos netted a header in stoppage time to see them through to a clash with eventual winners Spain in the round of 16.
