What do Cape Verde need to reach the World Cup knockout stages?

After holding both Spain and now Uruguay to draws, the small island nation of Cape Verde is dreaming of a spot in the knockout stages. So, what do they need to make it happen?

Despite initial skepticism from some in the football world, the first expanded World Cup is proving to be a resounding success, delivering excitement and surprises across the globe.

Cape Verde is the tournament's quintessential Cinderella story. In their first-ever World Cup appearance, the islanders have captured the hearts of fans worldwide with a series of stunning performances. Just ask Spain and Uruguay.

Two matches, two draws against two global powerhouses. While their goalless debut against the Furia Roja might have been dismissed as a fluke, the team - led by the now-famous goalkeeper Vozinha - proved they are a tough nut to crack against Marcelo Bielsa's Celeste as well.

Uruguay 2-2 Cape Verde: The Match

It was a high-intensity match full of twists and turns. The Cape Verdeans took the lead in the 21st minute through a brilliant free-kick from Kevin Lenini, a shot that perhaps left goalkeeper Fernando Muslera with some regrets.

However, Uruguay's renowned garra charrúa - their fighting spirit - surfaced late in the first half, with quick-fire goals from Ronald Araújo and then Agustín Canobbio turning the game around, sending Uruguay into the break with a lead.

Then, in the 61st minute, the unthinkable happened.

A defensive error by Mathías Olivera saw him mis-hit a clearance, and Jamiro Monteiro pounced on the loose ball. He skillfully bypassed a poorly-timed rush from Muslera and slotted the ball into the net to seal the draw.

This second point in two games has Cape Verde within touching distance of the last 32.

Group H: The Path to Qualification

In their historic World Cup debut, Cape Verde has a genuine chance to progress from the group stage to the knockout rounds.

Spain currently leads Group H with 4 points, followed by Uruguay and Cape Verde, both on 2 points. Saudi Arabia sits at the bottom with 1 point.

Having already faced the group's two giants, Cape Verde could now advance even with a draw against the Saudis, potentially qualifying as one of the best third-placed teams.

A victory in their final match, however, would guarantee their qualification, though much will also depend on the outcome of the Uruguay v Spain match and results from other groups.

For Vozinha and his teammates, the dream continues. Football has given us many surprises throughout its history, but this would surely be one of football's biggest upsets.
