Bristol City eyeing move for Premier League defender

Bristol City are reportedly eyeing a move for Ipswich Town's 25 year-old defender Harry Clarke this summer.

The Robins, who finished 12th in the Championship last season, are looking to strengthen their squad ahead of their first season under new manager Michael Skubala.

With doubts beginning to grow over Ross McCrorie's future at Ashton Gate, Bristol City are reportedly entering the market for a full back.

McCrorie, a Scotland international, was 12 months left on his current contract with the Robins, meaning that the Championship outfit risk losing one of their key players on a free next summer.

BBC Sport's Nick Mashiter has reported that this has led to interest in Harry Clarke, who spent the second half of last season on loan at Charlton Athletic.

With Ipswich earning promotion to the Premier League, Clarke is likely to be surplus to requirements at Portman Road, giving Bristol City the opportunity to move for his signature.

Clarke only joined the Tractor Boys from Arsenal in 2023, going on to make 67 appearances for the club, but now looks set for a permanent move away just three years later.

Despite being frozen out and loaned to Charlton last season, Clarke was a key man in Ipswich's promotion in the 2023/24 season, making 39 Championship appearances, having also been part of the squad who got promoted from League One the year before.

Bristol City, under new manager Skubala head into the 2026/27 season searching for their first ever promotion to the top flight, with top-level experience continuing to be targeted.

Should Clarke make the move to Ashton Gate this summer, he would be the second player in as many seasons to trade Ipswich for Bristol, after former Town captain Sam Morsy moved to City last summer, before being released ahead of this new season.
