What are the World Cup yellow and red card suspension rules?

An all-action 2026 World Cup opener saw Mexico emerge victorious in convincing 2-0 fashion against a lacklustre South Africa side.

While Javier Aguirre's team did exactly what was asked of them at the Mexico City Stadium, the visitors didn't cover themselves in glory and were restricted to just nine players after 84 minutes - with Yaya Sithole and Themba Zwane shown red.

Cesar Montes' controversial dismissal in the 92nd minute added more fuel to the fire, marking the first time in World Cup history that three players have been sent off in the first game of the tournament.

But how long will Sithole, Zwane, Montes and future suspended players miss? Find out the World Cup yellow and red card suspension rules below.

World Cup yellow and red card suspension rules

How long is a player suspended for after receiving a red card?

Players who receive a red card at the 2026 World Cup will be suspended for one match.

This applies to both straight red cards and dismissals that are the result of two yellow cards.

Fifa do have the right to impose further sanctions if they deem it necessary however, meaning players could see their one-game ban extended.

How many yellow cards need to be accumulated before a player is suspended?

Players can also receive a suspension for an accumulation of yellow cards at the 2026 World Cup.

Should players receive a yellow card in two separate games, they will be suspended for their team's subsequent game.

When do yellow card suspensions reset?

With that said, yellow cards are wiped following the conclusion of the group stage. This means that if a player is booked just once in the group stage, it will reset from the round of 32 stage and they would need a further two bookings before the quarter-final concludes to be suspended for a game.

Similarly, yellow cards are wiped after the quarter-final stage draws to a close. This means that if a player is booked just once from the round of 32 up until the conclusion of the quarter-finals, their yellow card count will reset to zero for the semi-finals.

The only way that a player can be suspended for the World Cup final is by receiving a red card in the semi-final, as it's not possible to pick up yellow cards in separate games after the quarter-finals and before the final.
