Wes Streeting is preparing to resign from his position in government, according to multiple reports.
The Health Secretary met with Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer at Downing Street this morning, but was pictured leaving no.10 just 17 minutes after his arrival.
Details of the meeting remain unknown.
Allies of Streeting have informed The Telegraph that he is in the 'final stages' of mounting a challenge to Starmer's leadership. In order to push that through, Streeting requires the support of 81 Labour MPs, a fifth of the parliamentary party.
It is expected that Streeting - a 3/1 chance to become the next Labour supremo - could resign and attempt to trigger a leadership contest as soon as Thursday.
However, there are doubts that he could muster the 81-strong support from Labour colleagues to put it up to Starmer.
Streeting is yet to comment on the situation, wishing not to overshadow the King's Speech, which took place shortly after his brief meeting with the Prime Minister this morning.
Instead, he has taken to 'X' to defend his record as Health Secretary.
"Under Labour, NHS waiting lists are falling, ambulances are arriving faster, there are more GPs, and higher patient satisfaction," Streeting wrote in a social media post.
"Lots done, lots to do. The Health Bill will boost the impact of our investment and modernisation: cutting bureaucracy to invest in patient care."
