Bristol Bears and Wales back Louis Rees-Zammit looks set to cause Steve Tandy a selection headache, after making a position U-turn.
Despite making a recent switch from the wing to full back since returning from a stint in the NFL, Louis Rees-Zammit has made clear his desire to return to his original position.
The move comes as somewhat of a surprise, given that the decision for Rees-Zammit to play at 15 stemmed from a request from the player himself, rather than his Gallagher Prem side Bristol Bears or the Wales national team.
Even more shockingly, the Welshman himself even stated in an interview during the most recent Six Nations that he “enjoyed playing 15 the most” as it was the position which got the best out of him.
However, ahead of Wales' summer Nations Championship matches, Rees-Zammit has dropped this bombshell.
Rees-Zammit's decision is likely to have ramifications for his country, with Wales still yet to find their long-term successor for the legendary Leigh Halfpenny at full back.
So much so that Steve Tandy hasn't named a single other natural full back in his squad ahead of the summer's fixtures.
This is likely to lead to one of Blair Murray, Tom Rogers or Josh Adams - all natural wingers by trade - featuring at full back for Wales this in the Nations Championship.
The Welshman returned to the wing for his club side Bristol Bears' most recent match, a heavy defeat at league leaders Northampton Saints, scoring a try in the game.
Speaking on Rees-Zammit's decision, Lam said: "Zam was really keen to play full-back, but the biggest thing is he loves to score tries and is a world-class try scorer.
“What he quickly realised, he was a British Lion as a wing. He wants to be, again. He’s a world-class winger.
“We had a discussion, and he said that he’d like to go back on the wing. Every time he’s played on the wing for us, he’s scored tries because our game creates space for the wingers."
Speaking on the character of the Welshman, Lam said: “I love the fact that he was honest enough to come and say, ‘Look, Pat, I really want to try playing at full-back’.
“So basically, he wants to be a world-class winger who can cover full-back,” he continued.
