The most prestigious competition in club football, the UEFA Champions League sees Europe's elite meet in a bid to be crowned champions of Europe.
First created in 1955, the European Cup saw league winners from a handful of European associations meet in a knockout competition, and though the format largely remained unchanged for nearly 40 years, more clubs were added as time went on.
For the 1992/93 season, however, the European Cup became the UEFA Champions League, with a group stage used. The format has been tweaked since, with a second group stage added and removed before the most recent significant change for the 2024/25 season seeing a 'Swiss system' used with an expanded 36 teams competing in one league before the knockout phase.
