Tottenham have reportedly reached an agreement with Newcastle to sign Sandro Tonali for a fee of up to £100m.
The Athletic's reported via David Ornstein: "Tottenham Hotspur have reached to an agreement to sign Sandro Tonali from Newcastle United in a deal that could reach £100million.
"The North London club stepped up their pursuit of the Italy international late last month by initiating club-to-club contact with Newcastle.
"They have now struck a deal which, if completed, would be a new club-record transfer eclipsing the potential £85m they have already agreed to pay West Ham United for fellow midfielder Mateus Fernandes."
The initial fee will be a staggering £92.5m with another £7.5m in potential add-ons based on UEFA Champions League qualifications. After a significant splurge last season, Tottenham have been busy again raiding several Premier League clubs, signing Jan Paul van Hecke for around £52m with Marcos Senesi and Andrew Robertson joining on free transfers.
Tonali enjoyed a fine season at St James' Park, winning admirers at home and abroad, with Manchester United also linked with the Italian. Fees of around £70m were being floated as the season reached its climax, but Tottenham have gone above and beyond.
But, as they look set to do with Mateus Fernandes from West Ham, Newcastle have pipped the Old Trafford outfit to another midfield target, taking their spending to nearly £250m.
For Newcastle, it leaves them with another hole to fill. Anthony Gordon has already departed, Bruno Guimaraes is being linked with a move away and Lewis Hall's future is still uncertain.
It may be seen as necessary to sell players to balance the books, though the Magpies are reportedly interested in taking Archie Gray from Newcastle as well as Switzerland starlet Johan Manzambi.
