Tom Garratt urges Birmingham City to sack Chris Davies after 'sluggish' Championship start

EFL pundit Tom Garratt believes that Birmingham City should sack manager Chris Davies after a "sluggish" start to the Championship campaign.

Blues opened their 2026/27 account with a 0-0 draw against Sheffield United at Bramall Lane, and while Davies argued that if any side was going to win the game it would have been his visitors, they left much to be desired in the final third and forced Blades stopper Michael Cooper into making just two saves.

In spite of Bristol City's summer spending, there was an expectation that Birmingham could earn their first win of the Championship campaign when welcoming Michael Skubala's side to St Andrew's on Saturday afternoon.

Granted, Dom Ballard's 85th minute goal was borderline unstoppable, but the hosts were uninspiring and needed a stoppage time penalty from Demarai Gray to salvage a point.

Garratt was critical of Birmingham's start to the season and suggested that the club need to part ways with manager Davies sooner rather than later.

Speaking with co-host Callum Fowler on The Pyramid Podcast, Garratt said: "Chris Davies, he's gone mate. He's got to go.

"I spoke to a few of the lads who went up to the game and they were like, 'we didn't even deserve a point'. They were not happy one bit.

"They look sluggish. This is what I said about Davies. They look one-dimensional, they look slow and I worry for Blues.

"They need to get him gone ASAP."

Fowler added: "I think they've missed the trick. They should have done it in the summer if they were going to do it. When do you pull the trigger on something like this? At the international break?"

Blues turn their attention to the EFL Cup on Tuesday night when facing Brentford in the second round, before travelling to the Racecourse Ground to face Wrexham on Friday. It's acontest that marks the start of a crucial run of fixtures for the team before the three-week international break.

Southampton, Wolves, Norwich City, Derby County and Middlesbrough await Davies' side between Gameweek 4 and Gameweek 8, all of whom were discussed as likely play-off and promotion candidates before the season commenced.

Birmingham are 9/2 to be promoted and 16/1 to win the Championship after back-to-back draws to start the season.
