First established in 2007, the Tokyo Marathon is now recognised as one of the six World Marathon Majors.
Here is everything you need to know about the Tokyo Marathon.
The 2025 Tokyo Marathon will take place on Sunday 2nd March 2025.
The 2025 Tokyo Marathon is scheduled to begin at 9:10am, with a staggered start taking place for individuals of different abilities.
Unlike the rest of the six World Marathon Majors, which involve large loops or point-to-point courses, the Tokyo Marathon has five out-and-backs which requires runners to go over ground they have already passed.
The Tokyo Marathon is a mostly flat course which goes gradually downhill, with the terrain allowing runners to record fast times.
The course begins at the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building, with the closing stages of the race seeing runners pass the Rainbow Bridge at Odaiba and the Tokyo Tower.
The Tokyo Marathon record is held by Benson Kipruto, with the Kenyan recording a time of 2:02:16 in 2024.
There were previously two marathons in Tokyo which were held on alternating years - the Tokyo International Marathon and the Tokyo-New York Friendship International Marathon.
The Tokyo Marathon became the sole marathon event in the city in 2007, with the first ever race also used to select participants in the 2007 World Championships in Osaka.
The event became recognised as one of the World Marathon Majors in 2012, joining the races in Berlin, Boston, Chicago, London and New York City.
