WTA Italian Open Prediction and Tips

The final preparations for this month’s French Open take tennis’ elite women to Rome for the Italian Open, and it should be a key form guide for the second Grand Slam of the season.

The leading stars of the women’s game are out in force, headlined by world number one Aryna Sabalenka, three-time Rome champion Iga Swiatek and 2023 winner Elena Rybakina.

Madrid finalists Mirra Andreeva and Marta Kostyuk will be hoping for another deep tournament run, while Italian star Jasmine Paolini is the defending champion and hoping that a return home can trigger an upturn in form.

As is often the case, there is a strong American representation with Coco Gauff, Jessica Pegula, Amanda Anisimova, Iva Jovic and Madison Keys all attending Foro Italico.

But clay is a specialist surface, with others handling it better than others, and it can often pay to focus on those with proven form on the red dirt.

WTA Italian Open Prediction

Best Bet: Iga Swiatek to win WTA Italian Open @ 5/1

Swiatek would have been disappointed to crash out in the last 32 in Madrid to Ann Li and she was also beaten by Andreeva in the quarter-final in Stuttgart prior to that.

However, such is the Pole’s strength on clay that it would be dangerous to underestimate her bounce-back ability and this tends to be the time in the season when she comes into her own.

Swiatek has won this title three times, in 2021, 2022 and 2024, and her four French Open titles highlight her as the best clay-court player in the world.

Being the fourth seed means that she avoids Sabalenka, Gauff, Anisimova and Andreeva in the top half, and it may not take much for her to ease into the quarter-final. The fellow seeds in her draw, Emma Navarro, Diana Shnaider and Naomi Osaka, all come with risks attached.

By that point Swiatek should have seen confidence restored and if able to find her peak performance then she would take plenty of beating on her beloved clay.

Alternative Bet: Karolina Muchova to win WTA Italian Open each-way @ 25/1

Muchova is making her first appearance in Rome since 2023 and the former French Open finalist could have a big say on proceedings if Swiatek fails to deliver.

The Czech talent is in the bottom half of the draw alongside Swiatek, who she may meet in the quarter-final, but she would be dangerous to underestimate as she is a proven big-stage performer.

Muchova regularly reaches the latter stages of Grand Slam competitions and her last two tournament appearances have seen her make the semi-final in Miami and finish runner-up to Rybakina in Stuttgart.

That run to the final in Germany was on clay conditions, showing her versatility, and it is interesting she is opting to play in this tournament for one so picky with her schedule.

Alternative Bet: Linda Noskova to win WTA Italian Open each-way @ 66/1

Czech tennis continues to be on the rise in the women’s game and Noskova is another up-and-coming player to hail from that country.

The 21-year-old is already up to world number 13 and she has been in excellent form, making back-to-back quarter-finals on the clay in Stuttgart and Madrid.

Noskova does compete in a trickier top half, but there should be few concerns before a last-16 clash with Sabalenka, who suffered a shock defeat to Hailey Baptiste in the quarter-final in Madrid last time out.

Noskova made a WTA 1000 final in China last year and it may not be long before she does so again.
