With Emma Raducanu forced to withdraw from Wimbledon and Katie Boulter suffering a shock first-round exit, Katie Swan is carrying British hopes and her reward for beating Irina-Camelia Begu is a clash with Grand Slam champion Madison Keys.
Swan was given a wild-card entry, three years after making her last Wimbledon appearance, and her lengthy battle with injury was made all the more worth it following her victory over Begu.
The world number 196 didn’t suffer a single break of serve in her 6-4 6-4 win over the Romanian, although she will be in for a much tougher test against 2025 Australian Open champion Keys.
The American won silverware at Eastbourne in the build-up to Wimbledon and she came from a set down to defeat Kayla Day 6-7 6-4 6-3 in her All England Club opener.
Keys is clearly a much better operator than her world ranking of 22 implies and she is twice an SW19 quarter-finalist, having reached the last eight in both 2015 and 2023.

Best Bet: Madison Keys to win & over 18.5 games @ Evs
Keys made the quarter-final on the grass of Berlin before winning five matches to take the title in Eastbourne, a strong hint that she is rediscovering her peak form.
That makes this look like a tall order for Swan, especially given her limited playing time on the WTA Tour over the last few seasons, and Keys should prove a cut above.
Keys has won both previous meetings with the Brit, winning 6-3 6-4 in their Wimbledon encounter in 2021 and recording a three-set success at the United Cup in January 2023.
That should offer Swan hope of staying competitive and she will have a passionate British home crowd on side.
Swan has been winning titles on the ITF Tour, so is confident, and she served impeccably in her opening win over Begu, saving the only break-point opportunity that she faced.
If she can continue to hold then that will put pressure on Keys to do likewise and it should mean that she isn’t completely outclassed.
Alternative Bet: Madison Keys to win 2-1 @ 7/2
Keys is one of the elite players on the WTA Tour when on-song and it is hard to envisage her suffering a shock second-round defeat.
That said, the American needed three sets to see off compatriot Day in her All England Club opener and Swan has plenty going for her.
The Briton took Keys to a deciding set in their most previous meeting, losing 2-1, while her first-round victory over Begu was an accomplished performance.
Swan didn't drop serve once, something which will allow her to keep close tabs on Keys, and that could be enough to see her claim a set.
Over 8.5 games in set one
10+ double faults in the match
Madison Keys 3+ aces
Pays 15/4
Swan may not be overpowered from the off and, having served so well in her opening win over Begu, she can ensure that there are at least nine games in the opening set.
Swan won her first set against Begu 6-4 while Keys lost the opening set in her clash with Day in a tiebreak.
There were 12 double faults in Keys’ first-round win, with the American having seven, and there could be plenty of tension on court as she bids to stamp her authority against a home player.
Keys has won both meetings with Swan and in the first encounter, which came at Wimbledon in 2021, she had eight aces before having three more in her follow-up victory at the United Cup.
