Shoaib Bashir on Brendon McCullum communication and England desire

Off-spinner Shoaib Bashir says England's hierarchy have been in regular communication with him since the disappointing Ashes tour.

Bashir didn't play a part in Australia as England endured a turbulent time on and off the field, before losing the Ashes series 4-1.

It has since been confirmed that director of cricket Rob Key and head coach Brendon McCullum will stay on in their positions, despite receiving plenty of criticism from various sections of the media.

The likes of Liam Livingstone and Jonny Bairstow have been critical of the England set-up since being out of favour, with the communication of Key and McCullum being a particular talking point.

Bashir remains part of the England setup despite losing his place in the Test team and he had nothing but praise for Ben Stokes and the management team.

"I’m in communication with the England management a lot and I definitely feel that they are keeping an eye on me and seeing how I am improving," said Bashir.

"They are tracking the things that I'm learning and I feel very well supported.

"We’ve had communication after the winter and moving forward they said to try and get as much game time as you can. After I broke my finger I didn’t play much cricket during the winter. I can hopefully now get some more game time and we will see where we are at.

"I was more than happy watching and observing, you learn so much and I’m still only 22 years ago. You’ve got to take in all the information and there's a lot of learning."

"Stokes, Baz and Keysy – they're the best people in charge in my opinion. The way they view the game is incredible. Its going to be a new era and the learnings we've taken can hopefully reinforce us as well.

"Me, Keysy and Jeetan Patel speak a lot about whats going on and I'm actually speaking to them again this week."

"We’re in communication about some of the stuff that I need to work on and its something that I've been working on. At the same time there are other aspects of the game that I’m working on as well. I’ve got a massive desire to keep playing for England."

Bashir has been involved with the England team for the last couple of years and it looked for all the world that he would be England's primary spinner for the Ashes.

Bashir played in a warm-up game at Lilac Hill where he returned figures of 2-151, before he then went wicketless for the Lions against a Cricket Australia XI.

England elected to go without a spinner for the opening Test in Perth and Bashir was then overlooked for part-time spinner Will Jacks for the remainder of the series.

Bashir believes he was still bowling reasonably well prior to his omission but he is determined to work hard to win his place back.

"It was a disappointing winter, all of us would have liked that scoreline to have read differently. But at the same time there have been a lot of learnings taken from the Ashes and we’ve got a nice time to reflect on the winter. Everyone knows that the season comes so fast and the process needs to be quite quick and smooth.

"I obviously didn’t play a Test but at the same time I think Nathan Lyon bowled two overs in Perth and then didn’t play again until Adelaide so it was very situational.

"The team was selected on a game to game basis and spin didn’t play a massive part in the Ashes.

"I wouldn’t say I was bowling to my best but I still thought I was bowling quite nicely. Its just one of those where you’ve got to work on it and I'm always looking to learn.

"I'm still so young and I don’t take that for granted. I'm so eager to develop and I’ll do anything in my power to try and improve.

I’ll do anything I can to play for England, wearing the England shirt is the most honourable thing for a cricketer.

Bashir signed for Derbyshire after leaving Somerset at the end of last season as he looks to secure the game time that Key and McCullum have referred to.

The 22-year-old is set to play a key role for the county this summer and Derbyshire head coach Mickey Arthur says that Bashir is leaving no stone unturned in an attempt to get back into the England team.

"Whenever I look out of my office, I see him," said Arthur.

"Outside of our training days Shoaib is always around. I’’ll be sitting at home and be watching the T20 World Cup, the PSL or the IPL and I’ll be getting messages from him.

"Have you seen this guy? How are we going to bowl to him? What are we going to do here?

"It's just lovely, I eat, sleep and drink cricket and Bash does exactly the same.

"From what I've seen in training, he's been amazing so far."
