Sheffield United set to swoop for Premier League star

Sheffield United are hoping to tie-up a deal to sign free agent central defender Adam Webster following his release from Brighton & Hove Albion.

The Blades had hoped to lure former players Harry Souttar and Anel Ahmedhodzic back to strengthen their backline but have been priced out of moves for the pair.

Chris Wilder's attentions have since switched to the free agent and loan market with uncertainty continuing to surround the club's finances.

Thirty-one=year-old Webster departed the AMEX Stadium earlier this summer after the Seagulls opted against handing the veteran defender fresh terms.

He made a total of 158 appearances for the Premier League club during a successful spell there, chipping in with eight goals.

A host of Championship sides have been linked with making moves for him during the current transfer window with United appearing to be at the front of the queue.

The club are in desperate need for defensive reinforcements with just Japhet Tanganga and Mark McGuinness, who has been linked with a move to Watford, their only senior players in that position.

Ben Mee was released at the end of last season whilst Tyler Bindon also returned to parent club Nottingham Forest following the end of his loan spell at Bramall Lane.

It's understood Webster would be keen on sealing a move to Sheffield United, although the experienced performer has a number of other offers on the table.
