Sheffield United make ambitious move for Argentinean star

Sheffield United are reportedly keep on signing Argentinean defender Nicolas Valentini this month as Chris Wilder looks to overhaul his first-team squad.

The Blades have been heavily linked with a big money move for former loan star Harry Souttar this summer, but it appears as though Wilder has set his sights on a number of new defensive recruits.

According to the Sheffield Star, whilst Leicester City's Australian powerhouse Souttar remains the club's top summer target, the club also possess a genuine interest in Fiorentina ace Valentini.

Reports have surfaced overnight that the club launched a seven-figure bid for the South American over the weekend, with other clubs around Europe, including Spanish side Alaves, expected to make their own moves imminently.

Sheffield United recently confirmed that they had tied Wilder down to a new long-term deal at Bramall Lane and have given the experienced boss assurances that he will be backed in the transfer window.

The Blades endured a torrid start to the 2025/26 campaign culminating in the dismissal of Ruben Selles after just six matches and the return of Wilder, who was dismissed just a few months earlier.

Despite an upturn in fortunes, United only managed to end the campaign in 13th place, 13 points adrift of Hull City who occupied the final play-off berth.

Wilder has recently reiterated his desire to lead the club back to the Premier League and is expecting to be busy as he fine-tunes his squad prior to the closure of the window in four weeks time.

The 58-year-old sanctioned the high-profile departures of Tom Davies, Danny Ings and Ben Mee following the conclusion of the season, and has also given the green light to both Andre Brooks and Chrisian Nwachukwu to depart the Steel City.

Evergreen full back Matt Doherty has arrived from Wolverhampton Wanderers, as has Brentford wideman Romelle Donovan, with a number of others including Kalvin Phillips and Souttar soon expected to follow the pair through the Bramall Lane doors.

There are other potential new arrivals in the pipeline too, including Valentini, who spent last season on loan at Hellas Verona, following his switch from Boca Juniors two years ago.

The Blades kick-off their Championship campaign against Birmingham City in front of the live television cameras on Saturday 15th August (17:30 BST), with the side 5/1 to secure promotion back to the top-flight at the end of the 2026/27 term.
