Sheffield United line up shock deal for ex-player

Sheffield United are reportedly looking at a return for Dutch midfielder Jairo Riedewald this summer.

Riedewald arrived at Bramall Lane on a short-term deal in October 2025 following the expiration of his one-year deal at Royal Antwerp.

After initially arriving on a deal until January, Riedewald made an instant impact and he subsequently signed an extension until the end of the 2025/26 season.

Despite making 25 appearances for the club, the former Crystal Palace man was surprisingly left off the retained list by Sheffield United at the end of the season.

He was instead named amongst the list of players set to be released, but The Star have reported that he could be set for a return to the Blades.

It has been reported that Riedewald was left off the retained list to give the player clairty and to allow him to explore potential options at other clubs.

However, Chris Wilder is looking to re-sign a player who was a major part of the club's resurgence following a poor start to last season.

At the age of 29, the former Netherlands international is very much in the prime of his career and he could prove to be a valuable asset after a full pre-season.

The Blades currently have Sydie Peck, Joe Rothwell and Oliver Arblaster as their midfield options but Wilder is looking to add more depth.

Kalvin Phillips has been linked with a season-long loan move and the potential addition of Riedewald would certainly strengthen their chances of a top-six push.
