After missing the cut on the PGA Tour for the first time in nearly four years, Scottie Scheffler is 6/1 to win The Open.
In fairly benign conditions, Scheffler was expected to contend at the Renaissance Club if not end his six-month winless streak, particularly given his links record.
But after a modest opening round of two-under-par on Thursday, Scheffler was unable to get going on Friday, and finished even-par for the tournament, two shots outside the cut line.
It brought an end to the longest consecutive cuts made streak on the PGA Tour (78) and raises more questions around Scheffler's form. The world number one remains the world's best player, but despite a number of impressive performances, has struggled to get over the line, recording four solo-seconds already this season.
Scheffler was nearly always in contention, however, and the missed cut does raise alarm.
The defending Open champion should feel confident about his game heading to Royal Birkdale, but the missed cut at the Renaissance Club suggests his game isn't quite where it needs to be.
Prior to last year's Scottish Open, Scheffler was gaining 3.2 strokes per round, and that's down to 2.9 this year.
Scheffler has also got a Rory McIlroy to compete against, with the Northern Irishman skipping Signature Events to cross the Atlantic and get more links practice under his belt as he goes major hunting.
The Open hasn't been held at Royal Birkdale since 2017 when Jordan Spieth pulled off a remarkable win over Matt Kuchar. As such, this will be Scheffler's first appearance at the venue. Many Americans have struggled on the British links, but Scheffler isn't one of them. His Open debut in 2021 saw him finish T8 before finish T21, T23 and T7 prior to last year's win at Royal Portrush.
