Sabri Lamouchi reportedly sacked by Tunisia following "painful" Sweden World Cup capitulation

Tunisia boss Sabri Lamouchi has reportedly been sacked after his side were hammered 5-1 by Sweden in their World Cup opener in the early hours of Monday morning.

The African qualifiers sailed through their qualification campaign without conceding a single goal, but were humbled by Graham Potter's side in Monterrey.

A brace from Tunisian-born Yasin Ayari together with strikes from Alexander Isak, Victor Gyokeres and Mattias Svanberg secured the European side a comfortable victory, and piled the pressure on former Nottingham Forest manager Lamouchi.

The Frenchman described the defeat as "embarrassing" and "painful" in an emotion post-match press conference, and now appears to have paid for the loss with his job, according to esteemed African football journalist Romain Molina.

Posting on social media on Monday, he said: "It's the end for Sabri Lamouchi as head of the Tunisian national team."

Whilst no official confirmation has come from the Tunisian camp, numerous other reputable sources in the United States, including the Guardian and New York Times, are reporting that Lamouchi's tenure in charge is on the brink of coming to an end.

Tunisia had hoped that the World Cup expansion would benefit their hopes of securing a spot in the knockout stages of the event for the first time in history.

However, their chastening defeat in Mexico means there is immense pressure on their final two group clashes with Netherlands and Japan.

Speaking following the loss, Lamouchi said: "It’s a difficult loss. It’s painful. Starting the competition with this bad of a loss is indeed difficult.

"With world-class players that we have in the two Swedish forwards, it’s something that you don’t recover from. We made too many mistakes.

"We have our pride. We need to react. We need to give a better image."

Lamouchi was only appointed as Tunisia boss in January, but his tenure has been heavily criticised having won just one of his five matches in charge with their 5-1 loss to Sweden coming hot-on-the-heels of an equally as damaging 5-0 friendly defeat at the hands of Belgium.
