Qatar picked up their first-ever World Cup point with a dramatic stoppage time equaliser to hold Switzerland to a 1-1 draw in Santa Clara.
Breel Embolo's first half penalty had put the Swiss ahead and despite creating an abundance of chances, they were made to pay for their profligacy as Boualem Khoukhi delivered a fantastic header in the fourth minute of stoppage time.
Murat Yakin's side largely dominated proceedings and it seemed the only threat to their superiority was complacency. They were sent a warning in the opening exchanges as a defensive lapse allowed Edmilson Junior to run through, but Gregor Kobel was alert to snuff out the danger.
But the Swiss soon got their breakthrough, albeit in controversial circumstances.
Remo Freuler was fouled in the box by Qatari goalkeeper Mahmoud Abunada, but the Switzerland midfielder appeared to have started his run from an offside position in the lead to the incident. However, following a VAR review, the penalty was awarded, despite FIFA failing to provide evidence of whether Freuler was in an offside position or not.
Embolo subsequently stepped up and dispatched the spot-kick. There was not only an expectation that Switzerland would win, but by how much.
Yet as the Qatari rearguard withstood constant Swiss pressure and the scoreline stayed 1-0, Julen Lopetegui's side grew in confidence and they were rewarded in the dying embers for their perseverance.
35-year-old captain Khoukhi produced an extraordinary leap at the back post to connect with Homam Al Amin's cross and the defender powered a header beyond Kobel to spark pandemonium on the Qatar bench.
It's a historic moment in Qatar's football history, while Switzerland are left to rue the glut of opportunities they failed to convert.
