Portsmouth enter race to sign Liverpool defender

Portsmouth are hoping to offset injury issues with the signing of a Liverpool defender.

Pompey are currently short on left-back options due to an injury to Connor Ogilvie, who is yet to return to training after undergoing knee surgery over the summer.

The Athletic are reporting that the Championship outfit are eyeing up a move for Liverpool defender Luke Chambers, but will have to battle several other sides for his signature, including QPR and Blackburn Rovers.

The 22-year-old has featured on multiple occasions for Liverpool in pre-season, starting games against Wrexham and Leeds, even getting on the scoresheet against the latter.

A product of the Reds' academy system, Chambers made a loan switch to Charlton Athletic last January where he quickly nailed down a place as a starter for the remainder of the second tier campaign.

He has also enjoyed temporary spells at Kilmarnock and Wigan Atheltic.

Chambers made his first Liverpool appearance in a 3-1 victory over Leicester and went onto make his first start in a Europa League tie against Toulouse just one month later.

However, he has struggled to break into the first-team since and will be allowed to leave on loan before the window shuts.

Portsmouth suffered opening day defeat to Queens Park Rangers at the weekend and are looking strengthen on the left side of defence, with both Ogilvie and Jacob Farrell on the sidelines.
