Next Rotherham United Manager Contenders: Millers winless run continues

Alex Bruce is under mounting pressure to turn the tide at Rotherham United after their winless run was extended to nine matches with defeat at Swindon Town.

Bruce, the son of former Birmingham City, Hull City and Newcastle United boss Steve, was handed his first managerial role by the Millers in June.

The task Bruce accepted has been far from easy with Rotherham experiencing their second relegation in three seasons last term and the playing squad undergoing major surgery in the summer.

However, in a results business and with the Millers loitering above the League Two relegation zone, Bruce faces increasing scrutiny despite receiving a vote of confidence from head of football Steve McLaren.

If Rotherham decide to cut ties with Bruce, we look at the candidates in the frame to take over at the New York Stadium.

Next Rotherham United manager contenders

Karl Robinson

Rumours have already surfaced that former Salford City boss Karl Robinson is being considered as Bruce's successor.

Robinson was sacked by Salford after falling to defeat against Notts County in the play-off final.

Despite his failure to achieve promotion, Robinson could take pride in rejuvenating a Greater Manchester outfit that had stagnated under previous management - and he still boasted a 44.7% win rate.

Andy Woodman

Bromley's loss could prove to be another club's gain as Andy Woodman is available following his shock dismissal.

Woodman was the victim of his own success as he guided Bromley into the Football League for the first time in their history before orchestrating their remarkable League Two title triumph last term, despite operating on one of the smallest budgets in the division.

Preserving their League One status was always going to be an almighty task, and Bromley's current position reflects that, but Woodman's sacking was still unexpected.

Demonstrating at Hayes Lane how he can maximise his resources, Rotherham may feel Woodman's guile and leadership will benefit their current squad.

Stuart Maynard

Stuart Maynard oversaw York City's remarkable National League title triumph where the Minstermen accrued 108 points and scored 114 goals to pip Rochdale.

His reward? The sack.

The former Wealdstone and Notts County boss was axed to make way for Scott Lindsey, and while Maynard expressed great disappointment at how his tenure concluded, his work at the LNER Community Stadium have made him an attractive proposition for several Football League clubs.

Maynard's York side played with intensity, confidence and clarity, key traits that would enable Rotherham to haul themselves clear of the bottom two.

Luke Williams

Once hailed as one of the brightest managerial prospects in the Football League, Luke Williams' stock has plummeted following a tough end to his tenures at Swansea City and Peterborough United.

Williams was most recently ousted from his position as Peterborough boss in September following a slow start to the campaign which left the Posh in the bottom four.

Prior to taking the Swansea job, Williams had earned plaudits for guiding Notts County into the Football League following an epic title battle with Wrexham in the National League, and his expertise would be something of a coup for a League Two club that has ambitions of scaling the pyramid again.
