Former Salford boss lined up to take over at Rotherham United

Karl Robinson is reportedly in the frame to take over as manager of Rotherham United if the Millers decide to wield the axe on under pressure boss Alex Bruce.

Rotherham slumped to their third defeat in a row and a fifth of the campaign away at Fleetwood Town on Saturday to leave them second bottom in League Two.

It's not the start Bruce will have envisioned after he was awarded his first managerial role in full-time football on a two-year contract at the end of June.

Bruce, the son of former Birmingham City, Hull City and Newcastle United boss Steve, faces an arduous task to galvanise a club that has suffered relegation from the Championship to League Two in the past three seasons, and finished the previous campaign second bottom in League One.

However, according to journalist Alan Nixon, Bruce may not have long to turn the tide with his former colleague Robinson being lined up to take over at the New York Stadium.

League Two

Bruce served as Robinson's assistant at Salford City before Robinson was relieved of his duties after failing to orchestrate the club's promotion into League One.

Bruce subsequently left the Red Devils and following Rotherham's failed pursuits of Mat Sadler and Ian Burchnall, he was appointed Millers boss by director of football Steve McClaren at the end of June.

There was a significant overhaul in the playing sqaud during the summer transfer window with 15 players departing permanently - including the £600,000 sale of Sam Nombe to MK Dons - and both Duncan Watmore and Liam Kelly retiring from professional football.

16 new faces arrived through the door in South Yorkshire, ranging from Wrexham stalwart Paul Mullin to Oxford's veteran striker Tom Bradshaw and Walsall's box-to-box midfielder Jamie Jellis, but the current cohort of players are struggling to live up to expectations.

Defeat to Cheltenham Town on the opening day revealed the size of the job on Bruce's hands and despite wins over Chesterfield and Northampton Town, Rotherham have found points hard to pick up having amassed just 10 from their opening 11 matches.

Only Crawley Town have accrued fewer points in League Two and four of the teams above Rotherham in the standings have played fewer matches.

If Bruce does end up being the fall guy for Rotherham's wretched start, then Robinson is at the top of the wishlist to take over.

The Millers are currently priced at 10/1 to be relegated from League Two.
