We take a look at the contenders to be the next manager of Greenock Morton following the departure of Ian Murray.
Murray was appointed as Morton manager in January and he was able to preserve the club's Scottish Championship status last season.
However, the new campaign has not gone to plan and Murray has been sacked after picking up a solitary point from the first eight games of the season.
Michael O’Halloran and Gary Miller will be taking charge of the team on an interim basis while the club's hierarchy look for Murray's successor.
Here are our top five contenders to be the next Greenock Morton manager.
Next Greenock Morton Manager Contenders
James McPake
James McPake has been out of work since leaving Dunfermline Athletic in December 2024.
The 42-year-old has previously led Dundee to promotion to the Scottish Premiership, while he also won promotion to the second-tier with Dunfermline.
McPake would be quite the coup for Morton but their precarious league position could deter him.
Glenn Whelan
Former Republic of Ireland manager Glenn Whelan was sacked by Livingston after just nine matches this season.
He had only arrived at the club in May and he will feel that his sacking was premature.
Nevertheless, he will want to prove a point and the opportunity to jump back in at Morton could appeal.
Michael Tidser
Michael Tidser made almost 250 appearances for Morton across two separate spells at the club.
He is currently in temporary charge of Kelty Hearts but he could be available if that situation doesn't become permanent.
Tidser has also managed Dunfermline in the past and he is still held in high regard at Cappielow.
Dean Shiels
Former Rangers player Dean Shiels has been out a job since leaving Coleraine in April 2025.
The Northern Irish coach has only managed in his country so far, but a move back to Scotland could tempt him.
The 41-year-old represented four different Scottish clubs during his playing days.
Ian McCall
62-year-old Ian McCall represents the most experienced manager on our list.
It has been 26 years since he managed Morton but he has gone on to have a successful career since.
He left his role at Clyde in October 2024 and he has won promotions with three different clubs.
