Next Celtic Manager: Five contenders to replace Martin O'Neill

We take a look at the contenders to be the next manager of Celtic following their 1-0 home defeat to bitter rivals Rangers.

Ryan Naderi's first-half strike condemned Celtic to a second Old Firm defeat in the space of a week following last weekend's 3-0 defeat at Ibrox in the Scottish League Cup.

Celtic also suffered a 3-1 home defeat to Hungarian outfit Ferencvaros in the Europa League on Thursday.

Despite remaining top of the Scottish Premiership table, manager Martin O'Neill has received increased scrutiny from Celtic's supporters.

Here are our top five contenders to be the next Celtic manager in the event that the club decides to make a change.

Next Celtic Manager Contenders

Robbie Keane

Robbie Keane has led Maccabi Tel Aviv and Ferencvaros to domestic titles in Israel and Hungary respectively.

He is currently looking for a new role after leaving Ferencvaros at the end of last season.

Keane has been linked with the Scottish Premiership champions in the past and the time could be right for both the club and the former Bhoys striker.

Craig Bellamy

Craig Bellamy looked set to join Burnley in the summer before he reportedly turned the job down.

He remains the Wales national team manager but there are now question marks over his long-term future.

Bellamy had a brief stint in Glasgow during his playing career and Celtic would be difficult to turn down.

Shaun Maloney

Martin O'Neill's assistant Shaun Maloney has long been tipped as a future Celtic manager.

He will have learned a lot alongside O'Neill and he will feel that he is ready to make the step up.

Maloney has managed Hibernian and Wigan Athletic in his early career and he will feel as though he is now a better coach.

Thomas Frank

Former Brentford boss Thomas Frank has been out of work since leaving Tottenham Hotspur in February.

His time in North London ended in disappointment but his reputation is still intact after his successful spell at Brentford.

Frank would be quite a coup for Celtic if they can convince the Dane that the Scottish Premiership is the perfect next move for his career.

Kjetil Knutsen

Kjetil Knutsen has been linked with numerous roles in the past few months following his excellent spell in Scandinavia.

The Norwegian has led Bodo/Glimt to four domestic titles and inspired some memorable European campaigns.

The club reached the semi-finals of the UEFA Europa League in 2024/25, before reaching the knockout phase of the UEFA Champions League last season.
