Newcastle are reportedly set to miss out on another transfer target as Leeds United move into pole position in the race to sign James Trafford.
Eddie Howe's side have suffered a difficult transfer window so far, with their pursuit of top target Johan Manzambi ultimately proving fruitless as the midfielder opted to join Aston Villa.
The signing of a new goalkeeper has long been a priority at St James' Park, and England international Trafford has repeatedly been linked with a move to the north east.
Newcastle had rekindled their interest in the 23-year-old in recent weeks, having missed out on the goalkeeper last summer when he opted to return to Manchester City from Burnley.
A season spent deputising for Gianluigi Donnarumma has meant that Trafford is once again ready to depart for pastures new this summer but it appears his destination will not be St James' Park.
According to a report from The Athletic, Leeds United are also hunting a deal for Trafford.
At present Elland Road is said to be Trafford's preferred destination.
Leeds signed Lucas Perri from Lyon last summer and the Brazilian started the season as first choice before eventually losing his place to veteran shot-stopper Karl Darlow.
Darlow has since made the move to Manchester United, leading for Daniel Farke entering the market for a new No 1.
Meanwhile Newcastle alternated between Nick Pope and loanee Aaron Ramsdale between the sticks in 2025/26 but opted not to exercise the buy option in the latter's contract and he has since returned to parent club Southampton.
Pope has made 131 appearances in all competitions for the Magpies since arriving in 2022 but it is expected he will be allowed to depart the club this summer if a suitable replacement can be brought in.
