Newcastle United are reportedly closing in on a move for Manchester City's £50m-rated Nico Gonzalez.
Gonzalez, 24, only joined Manchester City from Porto in January 2025 for a fee in the region of €60m, but now looks set for a permanent exit from the Citizens.
The Daily Telegraph's Luke Edwards via X, reported that the Magpies were 'closing in' on signing the Spaniard, reporting that while a deal was yet to be complete, confidence was growing that the deal could happen and that the framework is in place.
This was backed up by Sky Sports' Keith Downie, who reported that there is hope a deal could be completed this week, with Gonzalez valued at around £50m.
Newcastle's move for a midfielder comes after a summer of exodus from St. James' Park, with midfield duo Bruno Guimaraes and Sandro Tonali both moving to North London for a combined £175m.
Matthias Jaissle's side have already brought in young duo Aladji Bamba and Sean Steur for a combined €60m as replacements, but the Magpies are severley lacking in proven experience.
Despite his age, Gonzalez brings a plethora of top-level and Premier League experience to the club, having made over 200 senior appearances in his career, 19 of which in the UEFA Champions League.
He has also featured on 19 occasions for his national youth teams, but is yet to make a senior international appearance for Spain.
Should the deal go through, Gonzalez would be a statement signing for Newcastle United, as they look to rebuild their squad, which has been torn apart over the course of this summer.
