In a breathtaking title duel that's swayed back and forth between Jorge Martin and Francesco Bagnaia, only one race remains in the battle to win the 2024 MotoGP Riders' Championship.
Despite Bagnaia taking the chequered flag in a gripping race in Malaysia, Martin was able to extend his advantage at the top of the standings as he capitalised on Bagnaia's DNF in the sprint at Sepang.
We've looked at the permutations and what both riders must achieve if they're to come out on top.
Martin now leads Bagnaia by 24 points having missed the chance to win the title in Malaysia.
Only one race remains on the 2024 MotoGP calendar, which is now scheduled for Barcelona, replacing Valencia, on 15th-17th November.
MotoGP Points System Explained
If Martin wins the sprint in Barcelona, he will be crowned world champion.
The Spaniard can afford to finish behind Bagnaia in both the sprint and race, though he must not finish any lower than 8th or he is at risk of relinquishing the title if Bagnaia takes the chequered flag.
Jorge Martin result | World Champion if... |
1st | |
2nd | Bagnaia finishes 3rd or below |
3rd | Bagnaia finishes 5th or below |
4th | Bagnaia finishes 6th or below |
5th | Bagnaia finishes 7th or below |
6th | Bagnaia finishes 8th or below |
7th | Bagnaia finishes 9th or below |
8th | Bagnaia finishes 10th or below |
Bagnaia simply has to win the final sprint and race to have any chance of winning the title.
Interestingly, Martin and Bagnaia could tie at the top of the standings if both fail to finish in the sprint, Bagnaia wins the race and Martin finishes ninth, which would make Bagnaia champion on account of winning the most races this season.
