Winning his first premier class title at the age of 22, Rossi added six more championships to his collection before eventually calling time on his MotoGP career in 2021.

Not that he's resisted the urge to race entirely. Rossi has since swapped two wheels for four and sampled the rigours of the World Endurance Championship.

Valentino Rossi MotoGP records

The list of Rossi's MotoGP records is endless.

Having competed in the most races, the Italian holds the record for race wins, podium finishes and points accrued.

His run of 23 consecutive podium finishes between the 2002 Portuguese GP and 2004 South African GP is the longest in MotoGP history, while Rossi has accumulated a record number of wins at individual circuits including Assen (8), Mugello (7), Jerez (7), Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya (7), Phillip Island (6) and Sepang (6).

Valentino Rossi best seasons

As a multiple world champion there's an array of seasons to pick from, but Rossi's best campaigns are undoubtedly his triumphs of 2002 and 2005.

Embroiled in a fascinating rivalry with Max Biaggi, Rossi followed up his comprehensive first championship success by obliterating his compatriot again by accumulating 355 points of a possible 400, winning 11 of the 16 Grands Prix and finishing second in four.

Rossi was indomitable again in 2005 as he finished on the podium in all but one of the 17 races, taking the chequered flag a record-equalling 11 times in a season.

The Italian was back on the top step with Yamaha in 2007 and Rossi's consistency was unparalleled as he claimed nine wins, five second-place finishes and one third-place finish to quell the threat of Casey Stoner.

Many of his peers consider 2015 to be one of Rossi's best seasons, despite the Italian narrowly missing out on the title to teammate Jorge Lorenzo.

Valentino Rossi best races

Corresponding with the suggestion that 2015 was one of Rossi's best season, the Italian conjured some of his finest victories during the aforementioned campaign.

Assen was Rossi's only race victory that season but he achieved it in the most sensational fashion, overtaking Marc Marquez on the final corner of the final lap to take the chequered flag at the Cathedral of Speed.

Rossi's duels with Marquez were a sight to behold, not least at the 2015 Argentine Grand Prix where the pair clashed on the penultimate lap, but 'The Doctor' also engaged in multiple epic tussles with Jorge Lorenzo and Casey Stoner.

At Laguna Seca in 2008, Rossi and Stoner produced one of the greatest battles in MotoGP history, while at Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya in 2009, Rossi was forced to fight tooth and nail with teammate Lorenzo in a fascinating spectale.

Arguably one of the finest wins in Rossi's career arose during his maiden season. The famed number 46 produced a wet weather masterclass to recover from a dismal start to claim his first premier class triumph.

Valentino Rossi other series

A prolific winner of the Monza Rally Show, Rossi made brief appearances in the World Rally Championship for Subaru and Ford.

He's also tested Ferrari's F2008 Formula 1 car at Mugello Circuit and had the opportunity to complete several laps in a 2017 Mercedes AMG F1 W08 after swapping machinery with Lewis Hamilton.

Rossi has also delved into endurance racing and contested the Blancpain Endurance Series, Gulf 12 Hour and Bathurst 12 Hour, along with the World Endurance Championship which has seen him compete in the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
