Both defenders made a total of 19 World Cup appearances during their international careers.
Former Barcelona centre-back Rafael Marquez featured at five consecutive tournaments from 2002 to 2018.
Meanwhile, Mertesacker played at three World Cup finals and he was part of the Germany team that became world champions in 2014.
2006 World Cup-winning captain Fabio Cannavaro made 18 World Cup appearances for Italy, while 2018 winner Raphael Varane played the same amount of matches.
Two more World Cup winners are next on the list in the form of Brazilian defender Lucio and Spanish centre-back Sergio Ramos.
There is also a place in the top 10 for the likes of Lilian Thuram and Thiago Silva.
