French Open Men

Find out who has won the most men's and women's singles French Open titles in the Open Era.

Most men's French Open titles

Rafael Nadal - 14 titles

The King of Clay, Rafael Nadal's impeccable record on the clay courts of Roland Garros is unlikely to ever be matched. The Spaniard boasts an 112-4 record at the French Open and has emerged victorious in each of his 14 final appearances.

Bjorn Borg - 6 titles

Bjorn Borg came from two sets down to conquer Manuel Orantes in the 1974 French Open final and he successfully defended his title in the subsequent year against Guillermo Vilas.

Borg triumphed again in 1978 and claimed the clay major four years running with victories over Vilas, Victor Pecci, Vitas Gerulaitas and Ivan Lendl.

Mats Wilander - 3 titles

Mats Wilander followed in the footsteps of countryman Bjorn Borg and ensured Sweden's domination of the French Open continued in 1982 as he defeated Guillermo Vilas in the final.

Wilander, who also won three Australian Open and one US Open titles, also prevailed in 1985 and 1988.

Ivan Lendl - 3 titles

Ivan Lendl denied John McEnroe his best shot at a maiden French Open title when he fought back from a two-set deficit to win the 1984 championship.

He reached the final in the subsequent year but was beaten by Mats Wilander, before adding his second and third titles in 1986 and 1987.

Gustavo Kuerten - 3 titles

Regarded as the greatest Brazilian tennis player of all time, Gustavo Kuerten won the first of his three French Open titles in 1997, despite never previously reaching a professional ranking final in his career, and tasted success again at Roland Garros in 2000 and 2001.

Kuerten's success on clay was of a stark contrast to his performances on other surfaces, with the Brazilian failing to advance beyond the quarter-finals at Wimbledon and the US Open, while his best performance at the Australian Open saw him reach the third round in 2004.

Novak Djokovic - 3 titles

It speaks volumes of Novak Djokovic's extraordinary skillset that he still claimed three French Open titles on his least favourite surface.

After final defeats to Rafael Nadal in 2012 and 2014 before an agonising loss to Stan Wawrinka in 2015, Djokovic finally completed the career Grand Slam in 2016 and added two more French Open titles to his illustrious collection in 2021 and 2023.

Most women's French Open titles

Chris Evert - 7 titles

Winning seven titles across a 13-year period, Chris Evert holds the record for most French Open women's singles titles in the Open Era.

Evert suffered defeat in her first French Open final to Margaret Court but bounced back the year after, winning five titles by 1983 before she was beaten in straight sets by Martina Navratilova in the 1984 final.

The American avenged the defeat to her compatriot by defeating her in the next two French Open finals.

Steffi Graf - 6 titles

The end of Evert's period of dominance marked the start of Steffi Graf's supremacy with the German star featuring in six of the seven finals from 1987 onwards, winning three.

Graf then defeated Arantxa Sánchez Vicario in the 1995 and 1996 showpieces before claiming her sixth French Open title in 1999.

Justine Henin - 4 titles

Justine Henin became the first Belgian to win a Grand Slam title when she triumphed over compatriot Kim Clijsters in the 2003 French Open final.

She was eliminated in a shock second round exit to Tathiana Garbin in the subsequent year, but Henin bounced back to triumph three years in a row at Roland Garros.

Iga Swiatek - 4 titles

Iga Swiatek is the contemporary Queen of Clay having claimed four French Open titles since 2020.

The Polish star became the first female to successfully defend her French Open crown since Henin in 2006 when she defeated Karolina Muchova in 2023, and Swiatek made it a three-peat when she conquered Jasmine Paolini in 2024.
