Most assists by a defender in Premier League history

We take a look at the top 10 defenders who have recorded the most assists in Premier League history.

Premier League

• Trent Alexander-Arnold (64)

Trent Alexander-Arnold looks set to leave the Premier League at the end of the 2024/25 campaign, but he will likely leave as the defender with the most assists in the history of the competition.

Forming a remarkable full-back partnership with Andrew Robertson during his time at Liverpool, it's hard to imagine any defender will reach the staggering heights of the Liverpudlian when it comes to creating goals.

• Andrew Robertson (59)

Andrew Robertson, signed from Hull City for £8m, has been a revelation since joining the Reds in 2017, establishing himself as one of Europe's finest left-backs.

While he will likely be disheartened by the fact that Alexander-Arnold is destined for Los Blancos, it will also give the Scotsman a chance to top the list, needing just six assists to level his tally.

• Leighton Baines (53)

It's rare that a left-back carries a team over the line, but Leighton Baines did just that on numerous occasions during his time at Everton.

Largely known for his ability from set pieces, Baines registered 53 assists in the Premier League, whilst also finding the net on 32 occasions.

• Graeme Le Saux (44)

An England regular throughout the 1990s, Graeme Le Saux was arguably the first defender in the Premier League to make a name for himself for his attacking output.

Recording 44 assists in 327 Premier League games, Le Saux played the majority of his minutes at left-back, but was also comfortable playing as a left-sided midfielder.

• Kyle Walker (36)

Kyle Walker, involved in many all-time Premier League right-back debates primarily for his defensive qualities, was also capable of finding the right delivery in more advanced areas during his time in the Premier League.

He concluded his time in England's top flight with the same amount of assists as both Ian Harte and Andy Hinchcliffe.

• Ian Harte (36)

Ian Harte spent the best part of eight years representing Leeds United in the Premier League between 1996 and 2004, and, similarly to Baines, was equally as influential when it came to scoring goals, especially from range.

Harte added to his assist tally when returning to the Premier League with Reading in 2012/13, taking his total to 36 overall.

• Andy Hinchcliffe (36)

Andy Hinchcliffe didn't leave England during his professional playing career, emerging through the Manchester City youth academy before moving on to Everton and Sheffield Wendesday.

The left-back's most successful season in terms of assists came in the 1994/95 campaign for the Toffees, where he recorded 12 assists.

• Kieran Trippier (35)

Kieran Trippier has epitomized consistency during his time in the Premier League, whether that be for Newcastle, Tottenham, or even during his 2014/15 campaign with Burnley.

Despite returning to the division in what could be considered the latter stages of his career, his numbers at Newcastle have remained exceptional, with his output in the 2023/24 term for the Magpies bettering any previous season of his in the Premier League.

• Cesar Azpilicueta (35)

Cesar Azpilicueta, a fan favourite during his 11-year spell at Chelsea, defined versatility, able to play any role across the back four.

He wasn't necessarily known as a high-flying full-back, nor as a precise crosser of the ball, but he was able to contribute to 35 assists within the 349 games for Chelsea.

• Gary Neville (35)

If this was a list for the most successful defenders in Premier League history, there is no doubt that Gary Neville would find himself higher up, winning the league on eight occasions under Sir Alex Ferguson.

Neville played the game in a completely different era to the likes of Alexander-Arnold and Robertson however, so it's hard to judge whether the former England international would have the skillset to put up similar number to the pair in today's game.
